About The Programme

The ‘Masterclass at CERN’ programme sees students starting their learning journey long before stepping foot in Switzerland. Pre-learning sessions have been carefully designed to familiarise participants with the foundation that will come to use during the Masterclass. This encourages them develop a nuanced understanding of the subject matter.

The programme is designed to supplement the High School physics curriculum for students in Classes 9-12 across IBDP, IGCSE, ISC and ICSE boards. While open to all, the programme prioritises students who genuinely love the world of physics and those who envision a future in STEAM.

The Masterclass at CERN programme has been divided into carefully-curated phases:

Pre-Learning: Participants will be encouraged to enrich their understanding of particle physics and review foundational knowledge to ensure active participation during the Masterclass at CERN programme.

Masterclasses: Participants will engage in dynamic sessions led by CERN’s distinguished scientists, unravelling the enigmatic realms of Higgs Boson, Antimatter, Parallel Universes, and Quarks. Participants may witness experiment sites, offering a first-hand look at the behaviour of subatomic particles.

Participants will also take insightful tours of CERN’s facilities, including the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and the Antimatter Factory.

Research Capstone:

Once participants have returned, they will be expected to submit a research project based on their learnings during the programme. Certificates will be awarded to participants on successful completion of this project.

Participants will embark on a scientific odyssey under the stewardship of Dr. Archana Sharma, a distinguished senior scientist at CERN and founder of the Life Lab Foundation. Renowned for her pioneering work in High-Energy Physics, Dr. Sharma’s visionary approach is evident in every aspect of the programme.

Drawing from her wealth of experience, she has designed the curriculum in close collaboration  with physics educators in India so as to shape a rigorous pre-learning segment. Throughout the Masterclass, Dr. Sharma and her distinguished colleagues will personally lead sessions at CERN.

Their expertise promises to unravel the mysteries of the universe, guiding participants through ground-breaking research and exciting experiments and igniting a passion for scientific inquiry that transcends borders and disciplines.

Frequently Asked Questions

The programme supplements and enriches the high school physics curriculum by providing exposure to cutting-edge research in particle physics. It inspires and motivates students to pursue careers in STEAM fields and fosters intellectual inquiry.

There are no formal tests or exams. Assessment will be based on active participation in discussions, engagement in experiments, and the quality of the culminating research capstone.

Students will receive a certificate from co-signed by SternaXP and Life Lab International. The certificate will enhance students' CVs and university applications, demonstrating their commitment to academic excellence and passion for science. It may also open doors to future research opportunities and collaborations.

Pre-learning sessions are designed to familiarise participants with foundational concepts in particle physics and related topics before attending the Masterclass at CERN. These sessions help students develop a nuanced understanding of the subject matter, ensuring they can fully engage and derive maximum value from the experience at CERN.

The Masterclass includes lectures, laboratory visits, and interactive sessions led by physicists and researchers at CERN. Students will also get a chance to explore Geneva, soaking the cultural and natural beauty of Switzerland's most cosmopolitan city.
